Meghalaya

Meghalaya is an Indian state located in the North-Eastern region of India. It was established on 21-Jan-1972. The capital of the state is Shillong. The official language is English. Major rivers include Umiam, Kopili, Myntdu.

As per Census 2011, the total area of the state is 22,429 square kilometres, including 22,146 square kilometres of rural area and 283 square kilometres of urban area.

The state has a unicameral legislature with 2 Lok Sabha seats, 1 Rajya Sabha seat, 60 Vidhan Sabha seats. Judicial matters are handled by the Meghalaya High Court. Meghalaya shares borders with Assam, and has an international border with Bangladesh.

As per Census 2011, Meghalaya has a total population of 29,66,889 people, including 14,91,832 males and 14,75,057 females. The sex ratio is 989 females per 1,000 males, population density is 132 people per km², and the literacy rate is 74.43%.
